Why You Should Visit The Jersey Cape This Fall

Why You Should Visit The Jersey Cape This Fall

September 5th 2023

Have you ever visited the Jersey Cape in Fall?  Many think (and we agree) it's the best time of year to visit!  In fact, it is even called "Local Summer" because it's still in the 70s-80s, the water is still warm, almost everything is still open, and the crowds are more or less gone!

Here's a quick guide to enjoying Cape May County in Fall:

Mild Weather: During the fall, the Jersey Shore experiences pleasant, mild weather with comfortable temperatures. It's not too hot, making it perfect for outdoor activities like beachcombing, exploring around town, or simply strolling along the beach.  The ocean stays warm through September, but lifeguards are no longer on duty.  Please swim safely!

Fewer Crowds: Unlike the summer months when the Jersey Shore can get quite crowded, autumn sees a decrease in the number of tourists. This means you can enjoy the serene beaches and attractions without battling large crowds.  Is there a restaurant you've always wanted to try but couldn't book a table in summer?  Now's the time to go!  It's a great time to get out and explore areas and activities with no traffic or crowds.

Scenic Beauty: The fall foliage along the Jersey Shore is breathtaking. The changing leaves transform the landscape into a tapestry of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, providing stunning backdrops for your photos and outdoor adventures.  Cape May County is also home to Fall migrations of many animals, it's actually one of the top birding destinations in the world!  You'll also get a chance to see the monarch butterfly migration!

Lower Accommodation Costs: Many hotels and vacation rentals offer lower rates during the off-peak autumn season, allowing you to enjoy a more budget-friendly trip.  Also, shops throughout the Shore (mainly on the islands) offer up end-of-summer deals from now until they close for the year, so it's a great time to shop!

Festivals and Events: Autumn brings a variety of festivals and events to the Jersey Shore, from food and wine festivals to pumpkin patches and harvest celebrations. These provide excellent opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Seafood Delights: Autumn is still a great time to savor the fresh seafood that the Jersey Shore is known for. You can indulge in delicious clam chowder, lobster rolls, and other coastal delicacies at local restaurants as well as Seafood Festivals!

Beachcombing and Shell Collecting: The fall season often brings an abundance of seashells to the shoreline. It's a fantastic time for beachcombing and collecting unique shells as souvenirs.

Tranquil Beach Walks: The quieter atmosphere in the autumn allows for peaceful walks along the shore, where you can enjoy the sound of the waves and the salty sea breeze.  Experiencing the award-winning beaches of Cape May County without the crowds is to enjoy them in a whole new way!

Birdwatching: The Jersey Shore is a prime location for birdwatching during the fall migration season. You can spot various bird species, including shorebirds and waterfowl, along the coastal habitats.  Cape May County is one of the most important migratory stops in the whole world, providing a crucial lifeline along the Delaware for birds and insects traveling north-to-south along the coast!  You can take part in many different guided tours led by the NJ Audubon and similar groups.

Outdoor Activities: Whether it's hiking in scenic state parks, cycling along coastal trails, or participating in water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding, the mild autumn weather makes outdoor activities enjoyable.  Boating is also very popular in Fall, as is fishing in general this time of year.  Multiple surf fishing tournaments in September take advantage of fish runs off the coast.  The world-famous Cape May County Zoo shines in Fall, as it's when the most animals are most active, and you can get up close and personal with no crowds!

Wineries: Cape May County is home to multiple wineries, all with outdoor areas to enjoy a delicious glass of wine in a beautiful setting.  Fall is a great time to check them out!

Summer is great but it's just one way in which the Jersey Shore shines.   Autumn offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty, reduced crowds, and a range of activities, making it an appealing destination for a memorable fall getaway.
