The best French toast in New Jersey is flavored with an Italian liquor, served in a town named for a Dutch explorer at a restaurant that specializes in Greek food.

Yep. It’s basically a culinary geography lesson.

EatThis.com recently named the best French toast in every state. New Jersey’s representative was the limoncello French toast at George’s Place in Cape May.

“This staple New Jersey establishment has a couple of French toasts to choose from, but you should absolutely try the Limoncello French Toast,” EatThis.com said. “The sourdough bread is topped with limoncello Greek yogurt and fresh berries. We’re drooling just looking at it.”

George’s Place, which has been serving the scenic shore town since 1968, has banana French toast as well as a tiramisu waffle and pancakes with blueberries, chocolate chips or cinnamon nut. But it’s the sweetness of the lemony yogurt paired with the savory sourdough that gave the limoncello French toast the edge.

Not feeling something sweet for breakfast? George’s Place also makes omelettes, sandwiches, eggs benedicts, salads and more. Greek dishes like spanakopita, saganaki, grilled octopus and chicken souvlaki are on the menu as well.
