5 Ways To Incorporate Checkered Patterns Into Your Kitchen

5 Ways To Incorporate Checkered Patterns Into Your Kitchen

April 24th 2023

Fashion trends often influence the interior design world, so it’s no surprise that the popular checkered pattern has made its way into our homes. Lately, we’ve seen the square motif pop up in a number of ways—from the Gen Z-favorite checkerboard pattern to classic farmhouse gingham.

So jumping on the checkered craze is easy, regardless of your home’s aesthetic.

This week, we’re featuring five dining rooms from Instagram that nail the checkered trend. Featuring products like picnic-style tablecloths and colorful checkerboard plates, these looks are sure to inspire your next whole-room revamp. Keep reading to find the perfect checkered pattern to complement your dining room decor.

1. Gingham tablecloth

We’re willing to bet that gingham will never go out of style, but lately it seems like it’s one of the must-have patterns in traditional, transitional, and farmhouse-style homes. The royal blue and white tablecloth, seen in a post by @akindofhome, makes a splash in this eclectic dining room.

“Tablecloths are a great way to freshen up a tired and worn table when the time comes,” says Devin Shaffer of Decorilla. “Gingham is a classic, and this tablecloth offers up an old-school pattern that works well with the more traditional elements in the room.”

2. Checkerboard floor

Chess, anyone? This classic black-and-white flooring look from @mcgeeandco is definitely a winning move.

“Checkerboard tiling is a trend that’s been around for centuries and shows no signs of fading,” says design expert Jasen Edwards “The black-and-white pattern adds a retro touch to your dining room, and it’s a fantastic way to make a bold design statement. This look works particularly well in midcentury modern or contemporary spaces.”

3. Big-check throw rug

If you’re looking for a more subtle way to bring everyone’s favorite geometric pattern into your dining room, then you’ll fall for this throw rug featured in a post from @thislittlelifewebuilt.

“This subtle checkered pattern is a stylish choice that brings both warmth and texture to the space,” says Edwards. “A rug like this pairs well with both solid-colored and patterned chairs.”

4. Colorful checkerboard plates

These jewel-tone plates with a vibrant checkerboard pattern (designed by @vaisselle.boutique) are Gen Z-approved and add an eclectic flair to any table.

“Checkerboard-patterned plates are an easy way to incorporate this trend into your dining room,” says Edwards. “These are perfect for both everyday meals and special occasions. Mix and match them with solid-colored tableware, or combine them with other checkered accents for a cohesive, well-styled look.”

5. Buffalo plaid chairs

Another way to bring checkers into your dining room is with upholstery. Take a page from @theproperpeacock, and grab a set of comfy dining chairs covered in buffalo check fabric.

“Buffalo check chairs make a bold statement in any dining room, and they’re a fantastic way to add a touch of rustic charm to your space,” says Edwards. “The large-scale pattern works well in small and spacious rooms, adding depth and visual interest without overwhelming the design.”

Pair these chairs with a wooden table and simple flatware to create a cozy farmhouse vibe.
