A hotel that most certainly lives up to its name, Congress Hall, a seafront resort, hosted several early U.S. presidents (Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan and Ulysses S. Grant) after its construction in 1816 and was declared President Benjamin Harrison's Summer White House in 1889. The American composer John Philip Sousa was another regular — he frequently brought his U.S. Marine Band along and even composed "The Congress Hall March," which was conducted on the hotel's grounds in 1882. Today, after fires and changes of ownership, the hotel boasts a full-service spa, a speak-easy bar and the best sea-breezes the Jersey Shore has to offer — rocking on the patio on warm summer nights is a must.
