On Thursday morning, a dramatic implosion brought down the towering 400-foot smokestack at the former B.L. England power plant, situated with a commanding view of the Great Egg Harbor Bay in Beesleys Point. In a matter of seconds, explosives reduced the cylindrical landmark, which had graced the Jersey Shore skyline since 1987, to rubble.
For many years, this smokestack served as an iconic sight for innumerable travelers on the Garden State Parkway as they traversed the Great Egg Harbor Bay bridge, linking Atlantic and Cape May counties. Boaters, too, relied on it as a vital navigational reference point.
