Cape May
#1 in Best New Jersey Beaches

Known as America's original seaside resort, Cape May has been a premier summertime getaway for generations. Part of the Jersey Cape's stretch of beaches and boardwalks, this tiny town is located about 45 miles south of Atlantic City, New Jersey, 95 miles southeast of Philadelphia and roughly 160 miles south of New York City. It is home to less than 3,500 residents but welcomes upward of 50,000 vacationers every year. In addition to its pristine beaches, Cape May's roughly 600 preserved Victorian buildings and collection of quaint bed-and-breakfasts transport visitors to a bygone era. Its military presence also cannot go unnoticed; Cape May played a major role in defending the country during World War II, and about 30% of the population today is involved in the armed forces. Whether you choose to spend your days bird-watching (Cape May offers some of the best birding spots in the world), visiting wineries or touring historical sites, you're bound to quickly recognize the charm of this coastal escape.
Avalon
#2 in Best New Jersey Beaches
Early birds are sure to love the stunning sunrises that grace Avalon's shores each morning. Later in the day, visitors can surf, swim or lounge on inflatable rafts at this southern New Jersey beach. The town prides itself on its accessible beaches and surf chair program, which provides physically challenged patrons with complimentary wheelchairs designed specifically for the sand. (But remember to keep the chairs on the sand since they cannot be submerged underwater.)
Ocean City, NJ
#4 in Best New Jersey Beaches

Located about 65 miles southeast of Philadelphia, Ocean City boasts 8 miles of New Jersey coastline. Ocean City's position, sandwiched between the Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, means that visitors staying on the barrier island are treated to numerous nautical attractions. Since its founding in 1879, families have made the pilgrimage to Ocean City in search of its beaches, while its subsequent boardwalk was originally built in 1900. Ocean City was originally founded by four Methodist ministers, who intended the area to be a Christian seaside resort. The city's dry status, which prohibits the sale of alcohol within city limits, remains a carryover from its religious founding. (Travelers can still bring their own alcohol.)
Ocean City attracts families every summer with the arcades, amusement parks, restaurants, shops and more that line the iconic boardwalk. Meanwhile, its northern neighbor, Atlantic City, offers adult entertainment in the form of casinos and bars. Whether you're driving in for a daytrip or intend to spend the night at one of Ocean City's hotels or vacation rentals, the coastal city always offers something to do. Keep in mind that many of the area's popular facilities shut down when the weather gets cooler, but a handful of stores, restaurants and attractions remain open.
The Wildwoods
#6 in Best New Jersey Beaches

The Wildwoods – a resort area in southern New Jersey – is unique in that the space between its boardwalk and oceanfront is 500 yards wide at some points, allowing its sprawling beaches to host events ranging from monster truck rallies to concerts. With Ultimate Frisbee tournaments and adrenaline-pumping amusement park rides, this energetic region isn't for those looking for quiet relaxation. What's more, Wildwoods' 5 miles of beaches are free to access.
