Dogs in town may soon have a place to play while their owners are away. Ocean City officials are taking steps to introduce doggie daycare to the area by proposing changes to zoning laws.
A new ordinance, introduced during a recent meeting, would permit kennels and doggie daycare centers with approval from the zoning board. Currently, such businesses are prohibited. If adopted, this change would allow the first doggie daycare to open in the area, with a final vote on the proposal scheduled for January 23.

The idea has been welcomed by officials, who noted that pet sitting services are in high demand. One council member emphasized the town’s reputation as a dog-friendly community, noting the growing trend in neighboring areas. Another member expressed strong support, calling the service a much-needed addition for local pet owners.
The proposed ordinance was sparked by interest from a potential business owner, though no specific details were disclosed during the meeting. Officials stressed that any doggie daycare would be located in the commercial district and would need careful planning to ensure proper care for animals.
Currently, pet owners must leave the area to find suitable care for their dogs, especially when heading to work. Recognizing the role of pets in family life, the town has long embraced its dog-friendly identity, featuring amenities such as a dog park and seasonal access to beaches for leashed dogs. Annual events like a parade and other celebrations further highlight the community’s connection to canine companions.
With these updates, the town could soon see the addition of a dedicated service for its many dog-loving residents and visitors.
