132 Year Old Ship Revealed In Stone Harbor
January 3rd 2019
Locals and visitors alike began to stir on Christmas Eve when word spread of an amazing discovery on the beach at Stone Harbor Point.
After some strong winds that previous weekend, the remains of what appeared to be a wooden ship, 25 feet in length, appeared uncovered in the sands.
After a day or two of speculation on social media, local historians determined it was the D.H. Ingraham, a schooner bound for Richmond, Virginia, carrying limes and five sailors that ran aground one night in December 1886. Members of the Anglesea Lifesaving Station, alerted by torches lit by the crew, rescued the sailors during the night rescue, and two of the medals awarded to the heroes are still on display at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood.
Old shipwreck discoveries are not uncommon to the area, with a 100-200 foot vessel discovered in Barnegat in 2014.
No word yet as to what will be done with the pieces of the ship.
